October 21, 2021 – Liberty Puerto Rico announced today it made a special donation of $1 million to invest in high-impact initiatives that contribute to the socio-economic development of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). As part of the celebration as the “New Liberty”, the donation was made through the Liberty Foundation as a gesture of gratitude for the trust and support customers, employees, and communities have given the company. Liberty also announced that 2020 Olympic gold medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn would be the new ambassador for the company and the Liberty Foundation.
The $1 million grant benefits initiatives in entrepreneurship, women empowerment, education, and environmental protection. The donation will have a multi-year direct impact among the different initiatives and stands as an additional contribution to the Foundation’s usual yearly donation program.
“This social investment will help promote sustainable and empowerment projects that focus on socio-economic development and have a positive impact among underserved populations throughout Puerto Rico and the USVI,” explained Naji Khoury, president of Liberty Foundation, “Connecting with our communities and supporting them is an essential part of Liberty’s culture.”
With a strong entrepreneurship development objective, Liberty Foundation will be partnering with Grupo Guayacán to launch a project that will offer mentoring services and seed capital for startups in the areas of education, health/social well-being, arts & culture, and environment protection, which are the pillars of the Foundation. Guayacán will receive a $500,000 donation to provide small businesses in Puerto Rico with the education, tools, coaching, and mentoring opportunities needed to take their ventures to the next level.
To support women empowerment, Liberty Foundation will join efforts with Centro para Puerto Rico, a program of the Fundación Sila M. Calderón (FSMC), to develop the “Centro de Transformación y Ayuda a Sobrevivientes de Violencia” (CE-TRANSFORMA). A combined donation of $65,000 and Liberty internet services will help 300 gender violence survivors by giving them access to psychological, legal, and advocacy support services. Social workers and facilitators will also help some of them reach economic independence to break out of the violence cycle. “The fight against gender-based violence is a very important matter for Liberty. We lost an employee last November and we have become an active participant in the cause ever since,” noted Khoury.
Regarding education efforts, Liberty Foundation is strengthening its partnership with Instituto Nueva Escuela with a $200,000 grant that will contribute to the project that will transform 50 additional public schools into Montessori schools over the next five years. This project seeks to improve the quality of public education in Puerto Rico through the Montessori methodology, which has proven successful in promoting academic excellence and transforming the school community in the 46 public schools where it has been implemented so far. “Providing a quality education to all of our students is key to accelerating socio-economic development in Puerto Rico. We believe this initiative can help students receive a quality education and thus become productive citizens that will make a better future for Puerto Rico a reality,” said Khoury about the project.
Liberty Foundation will also continue supporting environmental protection efforts through its partnership with Para La Naturaleza. This institution will receive a $150,000 grant to promote agroecology and environmental sustainability. Para la Naturaleza will work on community gardens, demonstrative garden plots, and outdoor trail projects in various municipalities around the island including, Culebra and Vieques.
Helping communities in the USVI
Khoury also announced that the company made a special donation of $100,000 to six community organizations in the USVI through the Liberty Foundation. This donation will also drive sustainable socio-economic development in the USVI and will focus on gender violence survivors, youth, and children.
The organizations that received funds from this social investment are the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, the Family Resource Center in St. Thomas, The Virgin Islands Children’s Museum in St. Thomas, The Children’s Museum of St. Croix, My Brother’s Workshops, and The Caribbean Centers for Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands in St. Croix. “With the greater reach we have now, we are committed to helping more communities across the USVI and making a significant contribution in the markets we serve,” commented Khoury.
New Ambassador
In addition to the investment to promote economic development, Khoury introduced Olympic gold medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn as the new ambassador for Liberty and Liberty Foundation. The Puerto Rican track athlete signed a multi-year partnership to collaborate in various social impact initiatives with the company.
As part of this partnership, Liberty Foundation will establish the Jasmine Camacho-Quinn Athletics Scholarship Fund for undergraduate college applicants from Puerto Rico who compete in track disciplines. In addition, Camacho-Quinn will promote and participate in initiatives that will connect her more with communities on the island, such as track clinics and special presentations to motivate young people to set goals and work hard to reach them.
“Jasmine represents many of the qualities that we value, such as a fighting spirit, pride in her heritage and perseverance, among others. As we have done, Jasmine overcame hurdles, got back up, and came back stronger than ever to win,” said Khoury. “We believe this is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the track discipline locally and at the same time promote Puerto Rico as a power player in the sports arena.
“I am excited to work with Liberty and Liberty Foundation to create new development opportunities for track athletes around the island,” said Camacho-Quinn. “I like to keep strengthening my ties with Puerto Rico and this is an excellent opportunity to be closer to my people.”
Since 1996, Liberty has invested more than $4.5 million in programs and services given by nonprofit organizations that make a difference in the lives of thousands in Puerto Rico and the USVI. Liberty Foundation is getting ready for its main fundraising event, the 24th annual Liberty Foundation Golf Invitational, which will take place next month in Río Grande.
$1 millón para apoyar iniciativas socioeconómicas en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses
Liberty Puerto Rico anunció hoy que hizo un donativo especial de $1 millón para invertir en iniciativas de alto impacto que contribuyan al desarrollo socioeconómico de Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses (USVI por sus siglas en inglés). Como parte de la celebración de la “Nueva Liberty”, el donativo se hizo a través de Liberty Foundation como un gesto de gratitud por la confianza y el apoyo que los clientes, empleados y comunidades le han brindado a la compañía. Liberty también anunció que la medallista de oro en las Olimpiadas del 2020, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, será la nueva embajadora para la compañía y para Liberty Foundation.
La subvención de $1 millón beneficia iniciativas en las áreas de emprendimiento, empoderamiento de la mujer, educación y protección ambiental. El donativo tendrá un impacto de varios años entre las diferentes iniciativas y es una contribución adicional al programa de donativos anual de la Fundación.
“Esta inversión social ayudará a promover proyectos sustentables y de empoderamiento que se enfocan en el desarrollo socioeconómico y tienen un impacto positivo en las poblaciones menos atendidas a través de Puerto Rico y las USVI,” explicó Naji Khoury, presidente de Liberty Foundation. “El conectar con nuestras comunidades y apoyarlas es parte esencial de la cultura de Liberty”.
Con el objetivo de promover el desarrollo empresarial, Liberty Foundation se unirá al Grupo Guayacán para lanzar un proyecto que ofrecerá servicios de mentoría y capital semilla para negocios emergentes en las áreas de educación, salud y bienestar social, arte y cultura y protección ambiental, que son los pilares de la Fundación. Guayacán recibirá un donativo de $500,000 para brindarles a negocios pequeños en Puerto Rico las herramientas de educación, adiestramiento y oportunidades de mentoría necesarias para llevar a sus empresas al próximo nivel.
Para apoyar al empoderamiento de la mujer, Liberty Foundation unirá esfuerzos con el
Centro para Puerto Rico, un programa de la Fundación Sila M. Calderón (FSMC), para desarrollar el “Centro de Transformación y Ayuda a Sobrevivientes de Violencia” (CE-TRANSFORMA). Un donativo combinado de $65,000 y servicios de internet de Liberty ayudarán a 300 sobrevivientes de violencia de género brindándoles acceso a servicios psicológicos, legales y de apoyo en general. Trabajadores sociales y facilitadores también ayudarán a algunas de ellas a alcanzar la independencia económica para romper el ciclo de la violencia. “La lucha contra la violencia de género es un asunto muy importante para Liberty. Perdimos a una empleada en noviembre del año pasado y nos hemos convertido en un participante activo en la causa desde entonces”, dijo Khoury.
En cuanto a los esfuerzos de educación, Liberty Foundation está fortaleciendo su alianza con el Instituto Nueva Escuela con una subvención de $200,000 que contribuirá al proyecto de transformar 50 escuelas públicas adicionales en escuelas Montessori durante los próximos cinco años. Este proyecto busca mejorar la calidad de la educación pública en Puerto Rico a través de la metodología Montessori, la cual ha sido exitosa en promover la excelencia académica y transformar la comunidad escolar en las 46 escuelas donde se ha implementado hasta el momento. “El proveer una educación de calidad a todos nuestros estudiantes es clave para acelerar el desarrollo socioeconómico en Puerto Rico. Creemos que esta iniciativa ayudará a que los estudiantes reciban una educación de excelencia y puedan así convertirse en ciudadanos productivos que harán realidad un mejor futuro para Puerto Rico”, dijo Khoury sobre el proyecto.
Liberty Foundation también continuará apoyando esfuerzos de protección ambiental através de su alianza con Para La Naturaleza. Esta institución recibirá una subvención de $150,000 para promover la agroecología y sostenibilidad ambiental. Para la Naturaleza trabajará en huertos comunitarios, huertos demostrativos y proyectos de senderos al aire libre en varios municipios a través de la Isla, incluyendo a Culebra y Vieques.
Ayudando a las comunidades en las USVI
Khoury también anunció que la compañía hizo un donativo especial de $100,000 a seis organizaciones comunitarias en las USVI a través de Liberty Foundation. Este donativo también impulsará el desarrollo socioeconómico sostenible en las USVI y estará enfocado en las sobrevivientes de violencia de género, los jóvenes y los niños.
Las organizaciones que recibieron fondos de esta inversión social son Women’s Coalition de St. Croix, Family Resource Center en St. Thomas, The Virgin Islands Children’s Museum en St. Thomas, The Children’s Museum de St. Croix, My Brother’s Workshops, y The Caribbean Centers for Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands en St. Croix. “Con el alcance mayor que tenemos ahora, estamos comprometidos con ayudar a más comunidades a través de las USVI y hacer una contribución significativa en los mercados que servimos”, comentó Khoury.
Nueva embajadora
Además de la inversión para promover el desarrollo económico, Khoury presentó a la medallista de oro olímpica Jasmine Camacho-Quinn como la nueva embajadora para Liberty y Liberty Foundation. La atleta de pista puertorriqueña firmó una alianza de varios años para colaborar en distintas iniciativas de impacto social con la compañía.
Como parte de esta alianza, Liberty Foundation establecerá el Fondo de Becas Atléticas deJasmine Camacho-Quinn para estudiantes de Puerto Rico que estén solicitando entrada al bachillerato y compiten en eventos de pista. Además, Camacho-Quinn promoverá y participará en iniciativas que la conectarán más con comunidades en la Isla, como clínicas de pista y presentaciones especiales para motivar a los jóvenes a establecer metas y trabajar duro para alcanzarlas.
“Jasmine representa muchas de las cualidades que valoramos, como un espíritu de lucha, orgullo de sus raíces y perseverancia, entre otras. Al igual que nosotros, Jasmine superó obstáculos, se levantó, y regresó más fuerte que nunca para ganar”, dijo Khoury. “Creemos que esta es una gran oportunidad para fortalecer la disciplina del atletismo localmente y, a la vez, posicionar a Puerto Rico como un jugador importante en los deportes.
“Estoy bien entusiasmada de trabajar con Liberty y con Liberty Foundation para crear nuevas oportunidades de desarrollo para atletas de pista alrededor de la Isla”, dijo Camacho-Quinn. “Quiero seguir fortaleciendo mis lazos con Puerto Rico y esta es una excelente oportunidad para estar más cerca de mi gente”.
Desde el 1996, Liberty ha invertido más de $4.5 millones en programas y servicios brindados por organizaciones comunitarias que han hecho una diferencia en las vidas de miles en Puerto Rico y las USVI. Liberty Foundation se está preparado para su evento principal de recaudación de fondos, el 24to Torneo Anual de Golf Invitacional de Liberty Foundation, que se llevará a cabo el próximo mes en Rio Grande.
